In der neuen Ausstellung der Kunstsaele, French Connection_Perspectives on Support/Surface, kuratiert von Heike Fuhlbrügge werden erstmals ausgewählte Arbeiten der französischen Gruppe Support/Surface in Zusammenschau mit Arbeiten zeitgenössischer Künstler gezeigt. Dabei geht es weniger darum, eine direkte Nachfolge zu dokumentieren, als vielmehr Perspektiven und Denkanstösse zum Thema Materialität, Malerei und Farbe zu eröffnen.
Das Interesse der Künstler des Support/Surface, als Gruppe vor allem im Zeitraum zwischen 1967-1975 aktiv, galt der Materialität und den Konditionen von Malerei, teilweise bis hin zu einer lyrischen Auffassung von Farbe. Es gibt kein Manifest, Inspiration gaben die Schriften und Ideen u.a. von Sigmund Freud, Clement Greenberg und Michael Fried, sowie das Werk von Simon Hantaï und Henry Matisse. Ihre umprogrammatische und poetische Herangehensweise an Malerei und ihre Materialität heben die Arbeiten der Künstler der Support/Surface deutlichen den Werken der Arte Povera und der in Frankreich bekannten BMPT Gruppe ab. In Zusammenschau mit aktuellen zeitgenössischen Arbeiten ergeben sich neue Blickachsen, Ideen und Einsichten zu dem umfassenden Thema, das die Support/Surface aufgeworfen hat.
Wir sind dankbar mit Bernard Ceysson einen ausgewiesenen Experten und seit über vierzig Jahren unermüdlichen Verteidiger der Visionen der Support/Surface-Künstler, zu einem Gespräch in der Ausstellung begrüßen zu dürfen. Seit 1960 ist er einer der Hauptakteure der Kunst in Frankreich, war u.a. Direktor des Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Saint Etienne und leitete das Musée national d'art moderne am Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Heute ist er ein bekannter Autor und Galerist.
Das Gespräch mit Bernard Ceysson findet in englischer Sprache mit der Kuratorin Dr. Heike Fuhlbrügge am Samstag, den 30.04.2016 um 13.30 Uhr statt.

The new Kunstsaele exhibition French Connection_Perspectives on Support/Surface curated by Heike Fuhlbrügge will show, for the first time, selected works by the french group Support/Surface, along with works by contemporary artist. The purpose being not merely to document a direct line of succession but rather to open up perspectives and to provide inspiration for new thoughts on topics of material, painting and color.
As a group, particularly in the period from 1967 - 1975, the main interest of the Support/Surface artists was in the material and the conditions of painting, in some cases taking it as far as a lyrical understanding of color. There is no manifesto. Inspiration was drawn from, among other things, the writings and ideas of Sigmund Freud, Clement Greenberg and Michael Fried, as well as the works of Simon Hantaï and Henry Matisse.
Their unprogrammatic and poetic approach to painting and to their materials sets the works of the Support/Surface artists apart from works of Arte Povera and from the in France well-known BMPT group. Presented alongside current contemporary art works, new perspectives, ideas and insights into the topic that Support/Surface introduced will emerge.
We are very grateful to welcome Bernard Ceysson, a proven expert and, for over forty years, a relentless defender of the visions of the Support/Surface artists, for a talk at the exhibition. Since 1960, he has been one of the key players in France's art world. He was the director of the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Saint Etienne and head of the Musée national d'art moderne am Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Today he is a well-known author and gallery owner.
The talk with Bernard Ceysson will be held in English together with the curator Dr. Heike Fuhlbrügge on Saturday, 30 April 2016 at 1.30 pm.
